Job Description
West Roxbury Main Streets, a dynamic, successful Main Street program in Boston, is accepting applications for the position of executive director. The executive director is responsible for coordinating economic development activities for a thriving and diverse neighborhood commercial district.

Mission
The mission of West Roxbury Main Streets (WRMS) is to promote West Roxbury’s Centre & Spring Street corridor as an appealing destination and the dynamic center of our community. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, we bring together local volunteers, businesses and public agencies to strengthen West Roxbury’s economic vitality, physical appearance and unique local character. WRMS follows the National Main Street Program’s four-point approach.

The Board of Directors relies on the executive director as the only full-time employee.  The organization is financially sound and benefits from a vibrant core of active volunteer business and community leaders.

About the Position
Reporting to the President of the Board of Directors, the executive director is the primary advocate, manager and producer of local marketing and promotion activities (including social media), storefront renovations and other physical improvement projects, small business development assistance, fundraising, communication with the board of directors and board committees, recruitment of members, coordination of volunteers, management of part-time staff or consultants (as needed), communications to members (including website management), financial record keeping, and maintaining productive relationships with business owners, public officials and other volunteer civic groups.

Daily presence on the street and throughout the district is a critical component of this role. Direct engagement of business and property owners is a key ingredient of the executive director’s tasks and responsibilities, and an important investment in the engagement and expansion of our business membership.

Regular business hours are typical, but some flexibility is required to accommodate occasional evening meetings or weekend activities.

Specific Duties include:

  • Staff, coordinate, and help implement the work of the Board and relevant volunteer committees, including meeting agenda management, Board communication, etc.
  • Conduct outreach to stay on top of community issues, particularly those of small business owners in the district
  • Coordinate economic revitalization efforts in the district by building relationships with merchants, property owners, and other organizations
  • Coordinate development activities, including grant writing and fundraising events
  • Coordinate efforts to market and promote the business district by developing promotional materials and events, maintain the organization’s web site, e-newsletter, and other outreach material
  • Represent the organization at local and city-wide meetings and events
  • Manage and administer the organization including record keeping, budget development, office administration, accounting, database development, and monthly reporting to the Board and Boston Main Streets
  • Recruit and supervise volunteers
  • Update and maintain WRMS social media presence on Twitter and Facebook, including responding to posts and messages, and expanding the presence as new platforms are developed
  • Review materials posted by all local media outlets relating to West Roxbury member businesses and post relevant items through social media channels and on wrms.org

Skills and Experience Required
Candidates should have experience or education in one or more of the following areas: event planning, commercial district management, public relations, small business management or development, retailing, property management, community development, non-profit administration or fundraising. The ideal candidate must be outgoing, entrepreneurial, energetic, well organized and able to work effectively with others and independently. Strong oral and written communication skills are essential. No matter how skilled a promoter or organizer, the executive director will not be successful without an ability to develop a good rapport with business owners, volunteers, public officials and other stakeholders.

Minimum Requirements

  • Skills and experience meet description above; preference will be given to candidates who have worked successfully for a nonprofit organization with a similar or related mission
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, QuickBooks, WordPress, desktop publishing. Experience with SalesForce, social media marketing, Constant Contact preferred
