Boston, MA – Masona Grill and West on Centre have joined businesses and buildings from across the region in dedicating the next year to increase their sustainability and reduce energy use through participation in the Challenge for Sustainability. After a large kick-off event in December, businesses are starting to take their first steps into analyzing their
facilities and how they can move forward to save both money and resources. Participants in the 2012 Challenge include some of Boston’s largest buildings and progressive businesses, from convention centers to small pizza shops.

The Challenge for Sustainability helps businesses save money by increasing energy
efficiency, reducing resource consumption, decreasing solid waste, and reducing
overall greenhouse gas emissions. ABC provides participants with hands-on technical assistance, access to energy audits, guidance in developing and implementing a sustainability plan, and connection to a network of sustainability professionals and practitioners for
networking and best practices sharing.

Participation for businesses throughout Boston’s Main Streets districts has been made
possible through a partnership with the City of Boston and funding from The
Boston Foundation. ABC and the City of Boston are targeting small to medium size businesses in all 19 districts, and hope to serve 50 Main Streets businesses in 2012. Masona and West on Centre join 16 other Main Streets businesses that have already signed on to the program and represent the West Roxbury district. “We believe that participation in the Challenge for Sustainability will bring small businesses the knowledge and tools they need to receive significant savings while protecting their bottom line,” said Kara O’Connor, of West Roxbury Main Streets.

Wade Winters, representing Au Bon Pain in the Challenge states that, “A Better City has been vital in providing the contacts, resources, and data necessary to avoid the red tape and
efficiently pursue energy saving initiatives for Au Bon Pain. The ABC team members provide experiences and information that help others avoid mistakes and pitfalls”.

The Challenge for Sustainability was launched in 2009 by A Better City, a
non-profit business association focused on transportation, land development,
and environmental initiatives aimed at improving the economic competiveness of Greater
Boston.

Chef Jim Casey focuses on seafood at Plymouth restaurant the Blue-Eyed Crab, but weekend pig pickin’ events there have always been very popular. So when the West Roxbury resident began thinking about a new project closer to home, barbecue was on his mind. The result is the Red-Eyed Pig, offering takeout and very limited seating.

With the help of a Cookshack smoker, the tiny storefront turns out large amounts of barbecue for a neighborhood hungry for something different. “There’s plenty of pizza and Chinese food already,’’ Casey points out.

One look at the menu says this isn’t your average BBQ joint.

Surrounded by pubs, pizza, and nail salons, Centre Street businesses long yearned for a stronger retail presence to bring outside business and increased foot traffic.

In the last 16 months, a new breed of shop has opened in answer to those hopes. What’s more, those shops Wicked Sharp Ski and Snowboard,GC Skate, and Busted Knuckle Bicycle have worked together to help each other and the Centre Street economy at-large.

“They complement each other very well,” saidWest Roxbury Main Streets Executive Director Kara O’Connor. “And they bring in a lot of business from outside [West Roxbury].”

“New business and new life,” said Wicked Sharp’s Aaron Thompson, “always helps the community.”

Wicked Sharp opened its doors at the start of September, 2010, just in time for snow sport season. They were followed in December by GC andBusted Knuckle in April. As the oldest of the three, Thompson said Wicked Sharp was able to offer advice to Sherike Morris at GC and Jay Devitt at Busted Knuckle as they prepared to open.

Until recently, the common victualler license was among the most overlooked of city permits, according to Boston licensing officials. The license is required of every establishment capable of cooking, preparing and serving food.

An official in the city licensing department says that, in the past, the office had lacked solid communication with other city departments that also issue permits and the licensing division’s small staff has been unable to keep close tabs on whether businesses that need the license actually have one.

Meanwhile, some food service providers, including major, longstanding Boston institutions, have overlooked, for years if not decades, their need to ever obtain the permit that renews annually.

Some organizations that provide food service as a secondary function to their core business, like hospitals, say that in the past they did not think their food courts and cafeterias needed the license.

“For years, a lot of these places didn’t have them,” the chief handler of “CV” license application and issuance, licensing board administrative clerk Nancy Mickiewicz, said by phone recently. “There are so many places in Boston that sometimes some go unnoticed.”

Now, tthe Boston licensing department has launched a new effort aimed at making the common victualler license less rare.
