MISSION

West Roxbury Main Streets (WRMS) works to promote West Roxbury’s Centre & Spring Street corridor as an appealing commercial district and the dynamic center of our community. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, we bring together local volunteers, businesses and public agencies to strengthen West Roxbury’s economic vitality, physical appearance, and unique local character.

 

BACKGROUND

WRMS was founded in 2000 when residents and business owners came together with representatives of the city government to revive their neighborhood as a commercial and community center. Since our founding, we have helped support current business & recruit new businesses to West Roxbury.

WRMS has focused on community engagement through the grown signature programs including the Taste of West Roxbury, Celebrate Centre, and our annual holiday market.

Since our Visioning Program in 2016, we have created and dedicated our time to informing the neighborhood about events, activities, & business updates. We have done this through our community calendar, newsletters, & social media.

In order to help our businesses community thrive, WRMS commits to continue to:

  • Support existing businesses
  • Facilitate the opening of new businesses
  • Promote the walkability & mobility of our district
  • Engage business owners, landlords, residents, and city representatives in collaborating to ensure the business districts economic strength.

 

THE ROLE

Reporting to the WRMS Board of Directors as the only full-time employee, the Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of WRMS and serves as an external champion, organization builder, relationship builder, and internal manager.

 

The Executive Director’s major responsibilities include:

Provide strategic vision and leadership

  • Work with the Board of Directors and key stakeholders and partners to:

o Develop strategies focused on facilitating economic development that benefit existing and new businesses alike;

o Engage key stakeholders – business owners, landlords, residents, and city officials – in solutions-oriented collaborations designed to serve the betterment of Union Square;

o Ensure the growth and sustainability of current WRMS programs, activities, and initiatives.

  • Identify and secure new funding opportunities, including grants, unrestricted funds, earned income and a reserve to ensure adequate budget support and long-term sustainability of WRMS.

 

Community Engagement and Partnerships

  • Build and leverage committed and long-lasting relationships among all stakeholders, including current and prospective local business partners, community groups, the City of Boston office of Economic Development, and appropriate legislators and policy makers;
  • Successfully plan and execute the Taste of West Roxbury, Celebrate Center, & Holiday Market;
  • Assist property owners and businesses with business improvements and navigating the permitting process;
  • Serve as principal spokesperson and representative for WRMS in promoting initiatives, priorities, and accomplishments;
  • Ensure compelling and consistent branding and marketing of WRMS to raise the organization’s profile, reach new audiences and further engage participants; and
  • Further develop the external communications and social media strategy.
  • Maintain and promote WRMS’s community calendar, newsletter, and social media presence

 

Organizational Leadership

  • Manage daily operations, oversee all aspect of business and finances to achieve goals and objectives, ensure compliance to financial policies and procedures, and maintain internal fiscal controls;
  • Ensure strong partnership & compliance with the City of Boston office of Economic Development
  • Create and monitor annual budget;
  • Working with the Board, oversee the strategic planning process and implement programs that further the plan;
  • Manage volunteers, staff, and interns (potential).
  • Oversee policies, practices, and systems that positively impact WRMS and the community.

 

Candidate Profile

  • Three to five years of experience working in business or non-profit setting;
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills;
  • Understanding of and passion for the community, business, and civic landscape; responsive to small business and community needs; proactive in partnering with people from all sectors (local businesses, nonprofit agencies, local government and residents)
  • Superior people skills (interpersonal skills) and broad cultural competency;
  • High level of self-motivation and initiative; excellent communications, public speaking and presentation skills;
  • Excellent office and administrative skills;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Constant Contact, Quickbooks, and Google Drive;
  • Experience with Website maintenance and design;
  • Experience working with non-profit boards;
  • Previous experience in community and small business economic development, volunteer management, or community organization;
  • Experience in event planning and fundraising
  • Experience or training in urban planning, community development, or related fields is a plus.
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekend work as needed.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

 

Salary $45,000 to $60,000 annually plus benefits
